Some
absolutely fundamental premises underlying Jesus’ words/deeds.
1.
Jesus assumes
God exists. He doesn’t start by proving He exists, He accepts and acts, His
word and actions “testify” that He does exist. (So it is now.) 2.
The Presence of
God is a given. - God is here in this room. That is real. We view the material.
Scripture says the world is passing away, the Spiritual is eternal. 3.
The fact that
God is a person, w/personality . 2.
The Kingdom of God (Proclaiming His Kingdom). -The
essence of Life in the Kingdom (121x) is living by faith. If you want to have
life more abundant, live in the Kingdom. The Kingdom as the “perceived”
world turned upside down.(Luke 16:15. When
we live in the light of God’s revelation of Himself, we live in the Kingdom. A.
Human Life is not: 1.
The quantity of
what we own (Why labor for that which is not of eternal consequence Luke
12:15-21, Matt. 16:26) 2.
Human status or
societal recognition. (Heritage was of no consequence) 3.
Does not consist
of religious devotion (Matt 23) Not
what you do, but who you are. (Not what you are doing, but What God is doing
through you.) 4.
Does not consist
of accomplishments or human endeavor. 5.
Does not consist
of “self-fulfillment” (He who finds his life, will loose it). B.
Human Life is: (The values get turned upside down.) 1.
Love God, with
all your heart, soul, and mind. - The deepest most profound moments we have in
life are when we understand and experience this. 2.
Love your
neighbor as yourself. ( Matt 22:37-40, Mk 12:29-31, Luke 10:27) 3.
Inner spiritual
qualities (the Beatitudes, Sermon on the mount). A certain set of qualities
manifested in us ---in process. 4.
Doing and being
in God’s will.—This is the Kingdom! — The reality is that God is
accomplishing His will on this earth (a fact for Jesus). With or without us HE
WILL DO IT. (Are you for it or against? There is no neutrality) 5.
Abandoning
ourselves in God (Mark 8:35-37) When we loose our life, we find it. That is what
seems to us like the irony. ---That God pours back life into us, when we give to
Him. The power of God is operative. (The mustard seed)
C. Kingdom Access. 1.
The
Gospel of Mark begins with 1:1 “The beginning of the gospel about Jesus
Christ, the Son of God.” - Note - “good news” is about Jesus. Who he
was, what he did. “?????????????“
- appears 77x in NT, came to be associated with the genre of literature or title
of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. a.
Immediately
after his baptism and temptation in Mark, his first proclamation is found in
verses 1:14-15 “After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee,
proclaiming the good news of God. 15
“The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God is near. Repent and
believe the good news!” b.
Jesus
first statement of fact: (time is here, Kingdom is near) c.
His
first imperative: (repent) d.
His
second imperative: (believe) e.
The
Good News of the Kingdom has come near through Jesus. That which God promised
and willed in creation will come. His will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
It necessarily involves God’s reign, victory or Satan, death, sin, etc. Both
corporately and personally. f.
Key Words
in Mark.1:14 n
Repent 2nd
person, plural, present, active, imperative - to change one’s mind or purpose. n
Believe -
2nd person, plural, present, active, imperative, verb form of the
word “faith”, entrust.. Involves both assent to a fact, but also
“commit” or “adhere”. 2.
John
3:3-5 In reply (to Nicodemus) Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one
can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.” “How can a man be born
when he is old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely he cannot enter a second time into
his mother’s womb to be born!” Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no
one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.
6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.
7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but
you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone
born of the Spirit.” a.
John
uses the term “born again” or “born anew”. b.
Isa
64:6-11 “all our righteousness is filthy rags”, “No one calls upon you or
strives to lay hold of you”. We must experience something entirely new,
“otherly” than what we come to know in this world. c.
Titus
3:4-6 “But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared,
5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because
of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy
Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us
generously through Jesus Christ our Savior”. D.
The
Basics which encapsulate it all: The “Our Father” (Note: Corporate Emphasis) Matthew 6:5- “And when
you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the
synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth,
they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into
your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your
Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7
And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like
pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for
your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9 “This, then,
is how you should pray: ”‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed
be your name, 10
your
kingdom come, your
will be done on
earth as it is in heaven. 11
Give
us today our daily bread. 12
Forgive
us our debts, as
we also have forgiven our debtors. 13
And
lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’ 14 For if you forgive men when they sin against you,
your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father
will not forgive your sins. [1] The
priorities of Jesus, are the priorities of the Kingdom, which are the priorities
of His prayer, which are our priorities as well. As
Jesus spoke the last words recorded……So we end this class. Rev
22:13, 17, 20,21 I
am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. And
let him who hears say, “Come!” Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever
wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life. He who testifies to
these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.”
Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. 21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with
God’s people. Amen. |
