Session 7: The Last Week of Jesus' Life

I. Beatitudes

 

A.  “Blessed are the poor in Spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven”

A.    Sunday - The Triumphal Entry (Jn 12:12-19, Luke 19:29-44, Mark 11:1-11, Matt. 21:1-11)

1.     A Stark contrast within the week.

2.     Probably 2.7M people or over 50% of the population in Jerusalem for the passover feast. (Josephus estimates 256,500 lambs sacrificed, at least 10 people per lamb). Jerusalem pop. 25,000+

3.     John 12:12-19

n      v.12 Hosanna - “Save now” or “Please save”.

n      v.12 - Blessed is He….Psalm 118:25,26. (cf. PS 118:22-29)

n      v 14.- No reference to pre-arranging the donkey by John.

n      Riding on the foal of a donkey - Zech 9:9.(cf. Zech 1:1-10)

n      v.16 The disciples do not understand.

n      v.17-18, The sign of Lazarus.

n      v.19 - The Pharisees are further incensed.

4.     Luke 19:29-44,

n      v.39 Pharisees clearly perceive the crowds claims.

n      v 41. Jesus weeps over Jerusalem (cf. Luke 13:34-35!). He sees rejection.

B.    Monday - The 2nd cleansing of the Temple and cursing the barren fig tree.

1.     Mark 11:12-14 - Cursing the Fig Tree.

n      Absence of early Geeen buds.(March/April) - precursor to barrenness. (Hos. 9:10 as a contrast and Hos 9:16)

n      Micah 7:1

2.     The 2nd Cleansing - (Matt. 21:12-17, Mark 11:15-18, Luke 19:45-48).

n      “A Den of robbers” Jer. 7:11.

n      In Matt. 21:14-17, Pharisees confront Him again with the claims of the people, Are you sure you are willing to accept this? Jesus answers by quoting Ps. 8:2.

3.     On Tuesday, Jesus explains the Fig Tree. (Matt. 21:18-22, Mark 11:19-25).

n      Peter appears surprised by the extent of the withering. Mk 11:21.

n      Jesus directs the attention to Peter of having unwavering faith in God.

C.    Tuesday -

1.     Conflict in the Temple over Authority. (Matt. 21:23-27, Mark 11:27-33, Luke 20:1-8). Explanation also found in the parable of the tenants. Luke 20:9-19!.

n      The Parable of the tenants. The heir is rejected, and ultimately the owner rejects the tenants.

n      The Parable of the two Sons. Mat 21:28-32. One says yes and does not, One says no but does! Tax collectors and prostitutes enter ahead of you.

n      The Parable of the marriage feast. Matt 22:1-14. Many invited, few chosen, and original invitee’s passed over.

n      Parable of the 10 maidens. Matt 25:1-13 Preparation necessary, the hour unknown, keep waiting.

n      The Parable of the Talents.- Matt. 25:14-30- Stewardship.

n      The Sheep and the Goats. - Matt. 25:31-46.

            1. Preparations for the Passover meal.

a.      Jesus rebukes the disciples at the meal. (Matt.26:17-19, Luke 22:7-16)

b.     Jesus washes the disciples feet. (John 13:1-20).

c.      Jesus names Judas as His betrayer

d.     The New Commandment (John 13:31-35)

e.      Jesus predicts Peter’s denial.

f.       Jesus institutes the Last Supper. (Matt. 26:26-29) Jer. 31:31

2.     Jesus’ last discourses.

a.      The Way, The Comforter - John 14

b.     The Vine and Service - John 15

c.      The Spirit - John 16

d.     Jesus intercessory Prayer - Matt. 26:30, Mark 14:26.

1.     Arrest and Betrayal - around midnite?

a.      Jewish Trial - House of Caiaphus.

1.     Annas (former high priest)

n      He gets nothing out of Jesus, then proceedings get more formal.

n      Father in law of Caiaphus.

2.     Caiaphus (high priest)

n      Peter sneaks into the couryard, his accent gives him away.

n      close to 4 a.m.

3.     Sanhedrin

n      The 70.

n      Dominated by Sadducees.

n       

b.     Roman Civil Trial (interlude of Judas’ guilt in Matt 27:1+)

1.     Pilate

2.     Herod Antipas

3.     Pilate.

 

2.     Pilate’s Approach/Denial/

a.      Take him yourselves, you judge Him - (John 18:30)

b.     I find no charge against Him - (Luke 23:4)

c.      I’ll send to Herod Antipas (because Galilee is not his jurisdiction) to deal with it (Luke 23:6). Herod sees through Pilate’s intent and plays a joke for Pilate by returning Jesus dressed in robes. (Luke 23:10), from that point on Herod and Pilate become friends (Luke 23:11).

d.     He promises the Jews to punish Jesus even though he finds no capital offense. (Luke 23:16).

e.      Offers Barabbas/Jesus, hoping Jesus will be set free. (Matt 27:15-18)

f.       Pilate’s wife has a very disturbing dream (Matt. 27:19).

g.      Pilate actually punishes Jesus (John 19:1). Flogged, thorns, purple robe. Flogging called the “halfway death”, systematic punishment with a physician in attendance. Waist-high pillars, cat-o-nine tails.

h.      Pilate’s appeals to their pity to release him (John 19:4). Again “I find no basis”.

i.        Pilate asking “Why?” (Luke 23:18), appealing to their reason.

j.       Pilate asks “What crime has he committed worthy of death”. When Pilate hears the real charge/claim of “Son of God” he’s no even more afraid (John 19:8).

k.     Pilate buys time by a 2nd private interview (John 19:9-11)

l.        Pilate tries to set Jesus free (John 19:12-16)

m.    Pilate “washes his hands” (Luke 23:23-25)

 

3.     The Crucifixion. (Attachment of Harmony of the Crucifixion).

a.      Simon of Cyrene

b.     INRI -“Iesus Nazarea Rex Iudea” - Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews”

 

4.     The last 7 Statements of Jesus.

a.      “Father, forgive them for they know not….” (Luke 23:34).

c.      “Today, you will be with me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43)

d.     “Eloi, Eloi, Lama Sabachthani”, My God, My God, Why have you forsaken me”  (Matt. 27:46).

5.     Mark 15:38  The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.  39 And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, heard his cry and saw how he died, he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”

6.     Jesus’ side is pierced. (John 19:31-37)

7.     Jesus body buried by Joseph of Arimethea. (Matt. 27:57-60, Mark 15:42-46, Luke 23:50-54, John 19:38-42).
